Topic: Doing and telling good: Two sides of marketing and corporate philanthropy.

Janet Hoek is a professor of public health at the University of Otago, Wellington, Aotearoa New Zealand. She co-directs ASPIRE Aotearoa, a University of Otago Research Centre, and is PI of a Health Research Council of New Zealand programme supporting the Smokefree 2025 goal.
She has also received grants from the HRC and Royal Society Te Apārangi to explore on-pack warnings and plain packaging, and the uptake and use of e-cigarettes; she is now examining endgame measures including denicotinisation, reducing tobacco availability, and the smoke free generation policy. Professor Hoek is a Fellow of the Society for Research into Nicotine and Tobacco, and ANZMAC. She serves on national and international advisory groups and editorial boards, and has received several awards for her teaching and research, including the Universities New Zealand 2022 Critic and Conscience of Society Award.
Nicky Preston is Head of Sustainability at One New Zealand, responsible for the company’s ESG strategy and initiatives. She’s been with the company four years and was part of the project team to rebrand from Vodafone to One NZ.
Her remit includes contributing to NZ Inc, underpinning the company’s commitment to creating an awesome Aotearoa, and overseeing the company’s charitable foundation, Te Rourou. Nicky’s experience includes working in London and Sydney, and for a range of corporates including DHL and Uber in roles responsible for marketing and communications across Australia and New Zealand. She has a Master of Public Policy (first class honours) from the University of Auckland, and a Bachelor of Communications Studies from AUT.
